Worm Castings Information

Pick a good environment for your Red Worm Bin

The environment you choose for your Red Worm Bin is important. Worm bins can be housed both inside and outside with good results and your worms will thrive if precautions are taken when making your choice. Both have their pitfalls so be aware of what environment your Red Worms desire.

  • Inside Red Worm Bins - Setting up your worm bin inside is a choice for many. For many Vermicomposters inside worm bins are the only choice as their home or apartment has little outside options. Worm Bins protected form the elements definitely has its advantages. The main two advantages to keeping your Red Worms indoors is first of all the climate is easier to control. Red Worms thrive best in temperature between 60 and 80 degrees. That is not to say that they cannot live in temperature outside these parameters but ideallythose temperatures should be sought. The second advantage is your worms are usuallycloser to monitor and feed if kept indoors. Many a worm farmer keeps his red worms in a semi heated garage as I do!

  • Outside Red Worm Bins - Keeping your Red Worm Bins outside has a few advantages. One is it can be kept in a out of the way area not in immediate view of people. One other reason is keeping your worm bins outside room usuallyis not a issue. There are several issues that will come up when worm farming outside. One is keeping your worms at a temperature that keep them producing Worm Castings and Vermicompost. When the temperature gets above about 90 degrees it is not good for them, you will see a major change in their eating habits above 80 degrees. When your Red Worm Bin gets below about 50 degrees their activity level drops off sharply, and unfortunatelyso does the productivity. When housing your worm bin outside be sure to have a lid or cover of some sorts as you do not want your worms to drown. Red worms like their environment moist but not to wet, they can drown.
