Red Worm Bedding

There are many materials to use when setting up a Red Worm bin. The one single most important attribute for worm bedding is it must be natural, free of chemicals. Worms actually eat their bedding in addition to the food you serve them.

  • Coconut Coir - This a material that is harvested form coconut husks. It is the prefered material of many Red Worm Farmers and home use alike. It is very fibrous in nature and holds air and water well. We sell Coconut Coir in many quantities in our online store.
  • Shredded Newspaper - Newspaper is a excellent choice for bedding in your Worm Bin. Red Worms love it, they eat it and thrive in this bedding medium. It is best to shred it in thin strip and no more than a foot long. It also holds moisture well if not exposed to the air. As a word of caution do not use newspaper that has a gloss or color to it as it is full of chemicals. Only use the black text pages. It is easy to shed if you run it through a paper shredder then tear it into lengths.
  • Cardboard - This is also a terrific bedding material for a Red Worm Bin. Your worms will love it as it holds moisture well and seems to be a good place for Red Worms to mate. If you place a piece of cardboard that is moist on top of the bin in a few days you will notice it crowded by worms underneath when lifted. The Red Worm Store has also been told worms have a affinity for toilet paper rolls if cut into pieces!
  • Well Composted Manure - Composted manure is also a good choice for worm bin bedding. It holds moisture well and is a good food for Red Worms. They will eat it in abundance. Horse, cow, rabbit, and goat manures have all been used with success.
